Thomas aims for the next level

Dwight Thomas

Daegu, South Korea:

"At this point, I am my biggest source of motivation, I have been here too many times."

National 110m hurdles record holder Dwight Thomas knows that it's time for him to take it to the next level, and this week's IAAF World Championships in Athletics in Daegu, South Korea, forms the perfect opportunity.

Thomas, whose 13.15 is the fastest time ever recorded by a Jamaican, believes he has what it takes to upset the proverbial apple cart and find his way on to the medal podium, despite the presence of sprint hurdles' 'Holy Trinity', Dayron Robles, the reigning Olympic champion, world record holder Lui Xiang, and training partner David Oliver.

"I know what it takes to go out there to get the job done," said Thomas, who only weeks ago buried his father, who was brutally murdered in Glengoffe, St Catherine.

It's a horror that he is desperately trying to put behind him.

"I try to put it behind me right now. If I continue to think about it, people do get emotional but winning a medal would certainly make my family very happy," he smiled.

Thomas, a disciple of the late Herb McKenley, during his years at Calabar High School and beyond, isn't too concerned about the favourites in the event, and is fully assured of his own abilities going into what is one of the most anticipated clashes at the championships.

motivated

"I am motivated at this point to challenge everyone from the start of the gun to the finish line," he stated. "I'm just as confident as any other favourite, or maybe even more. The hurdles will never make me feel pressured because I saw what I have accomplished in two years, something that would take other good hurdlers a whole career to accomplish in terms of times."

Nonetheless, the powerfully built Thomas is not taking anything for granted and is focused on turning in the run of his life on his way to achieving the success he has been longing for at this level.

"To be in the medals here, I'm gonna have to run a personal best," he acknowledged. "I don't like talking about times but definitely in the 13.0s, and that is something that can easily be attained by me."
