Users of the Spaldings to Cave Valley main road in Clarendon and St Ann, respectively, are calling on the National Works Agency (NWA) and the relevant authorities, to take urgent steps in having the stretch of road from Alston to Cave Valley repaired.

Taxi, bus operators and private drivers, staged demonstrations along bad sections two months ago. They are once again becoming restive over the poor state of the road.

A number of public-transport operators are vowing to block the roadway if something is not done to correct its deplorable state before the start of the new academic year next month.

A taxi operator who identified himself as Marcus Murray told THE STAR he has had to be forking out more than t$10,000 every two weeks to repair his car's front end. He is unable to keep up with the pace with which he has to be doing so.

Murray, like several other transport operators, said the road which is riddled with potholes is also important to the tourism industry, as it is used extensively by tourists, who travel to and from the north coast.

They also said the road, which has been the scene of several accidents due to its current state, could put the Government in serious trouble, should visitors to the Island are injured.

A source from the National Works Agency told THE STAR the road is slated for upgrading under the JDIP programme. However, the source was unable to say when the work would commence. It was also not known hw much funds will be spent to have the work done.
