Floyd Coke

Coach of Rodwood United, Floyd Coke, says winningthe Pines Imaging Centre-sponsored U-17 title was a big morale booster for Waterford High School as the same players will look towards a successful campaign in this year's Manning Cup season.

Rodwood's Coke, who is also the coach of Waterford, last year's beaten finalists in the ISSA/Pepsi/Digicel Manning Cup, which they lost by a 3-0 margin to Jamaica College team, will now turn his focus on the Manning Cup title, the bigger picture. "We are happy that we won the Portmore U-17 title for the second time, however, our main focus this year is the Manning Cup," Coke told Star Sports.

"Definitely, this win is a morale booster for us, as we look towards the Manning Cup. We have a lot of talent on our Manning Cup squad, and eight players who didn't feature in the U-17 league will join us, as we get into high gear with our preparations."

While he admits that the preparation for the season are in the early stages, Coke expects a successful one.

"We have not yet cranked it up, so to speak, in terms of our preparations. We are mainly focusing on strength training, however, in the coming weeks we will be running hard and the next five weeks people will see some fit players running hard in the Manning Cup competition."

chances of winning

When asked about his team's chances of winning the Manning Cup this season, Coke was guarded with his response.

"People don't understand that the Manning Cup is a difficult title to win, it takes a lot of hard work and discipline, and that I have been working on this summer," Coke said.

In last Saturday's Portmore U-17 League final, Rodwood totally outclassed first-time finalist Bridgeport 5-0 in an impressive attacking display. Shane Watson scored a brace, while goalie Steven Bowes scored from the penalty spot. Dwayne Henry and Chevaughn Walcott also netted for the Waterford-based club.

Last year was a topsy-turvy year for Waterford as they lost their goalkeeper Okeeffee Lewis last November. Lewis and his stepdad Leonard Hamilton were gunned down in the Newland community.
