Star Tell Me Pastor

Unhappy about appearance

Dear Pastor,

I am a regular reader of your column. I am 63 and my skin looks saggy and my face is looking sagging. My husband is younger than I and he is very handsome. Sometimes strangers ask him if I am his mother and I feel embarrassed. I told my husband that I would like to do plastic surgery, but he is against it. So I am asking you if there is anything wrong in doing plastic surgery.

My husband and I are Christians and he feels that plastic surgery is not something for Christians to do. Whenever I see my husband talking to younger women, I feel insecure. I know that he is not going to bed with them, but I want to feel more confident in myself.

How do you feel about plastic surgery?

L.P., St Andrew

Dear L.P.,

Plastic surgery can be very necessary at times; and I would say thank God for this science. People are hurt in collisions and this surgery then becomes necessary. Others, like yourself believe that you need such cosmetic surgery because of the changes that are taking place on your body. It is a decision individuals have to make for themselves, and nobody should try to discourage them from doing so.

On the other hand, one should make sure that the surgery is needed and he/she should get professional advice. I believe that your husband has concerns, and rightly so. But he should also bear in mind that at present you are very unhappy about your appearance. Therefore, you should ask him to accompany you to see the surgeon and discuss the matter before you make your final decision.
