RAYMOND GRAHAM, Star Writer
TWO-time Olympic 200 metres champion Veronica Campbell-Brown will be hoping to break her World Championships jinx in the 200 metres, finally claiming a medal which, despite her success, has always eluded her. Undoubtedly the country's most decorated female athlete, Campbell-Brown will once again face her nemesis, Allyson Felix of the United States. Felix has defeated the Jamaican on three prior occasions at the meet, beginning at the 2005 World Championships where Campbell-Brown finished in fourth place. In the two subsequent global clashes, Osaka (2007) and Berlin (2009), Campbell-Brown finished second to the American. However, despite never winning at the World Championships, the Jamaican sprinter could finally snap the streak this time around. With a season best of 22.26 seconds, done in Budapest, it seems the runner is peaking at the right time and will face Felix after the American should have competed in three rounds of 400 metres, as she will be hoping to take an unprecedented 200-400 metres double at the Championships. good battles Both athletes have had good battles in the past. Who can forget the last time they met in New York a year ago, at the Diamond League meet, where Campbell-Brown got the better of Felix in an epic affair where she clocked 21.98 seconds to Felix's 22.03 seconds. While most of the attention will be focused on the Campbell Brown-Felix rivalry, the United States' Carmelita Jeter should not be taken lightly, as she is also in top form, hoping to spoil the Campbell-Brown/Felix party. With the 100 metres title to be decided before the start of the 200 metres, the result of that event could be a significant factor in the result of the 200 metres, as Jeter or Campbell-Brown could be on target for the sprint double. World leader Shalonda Solomon of the United States, with a best of 22.15 seconds, along with Jamaicans Kerron Stewart and Sherone Simpson, should add some excitement to the event, but at this stage they do not look like troubling the top three. |
