Jacques Harvey

Jacques Harvey produced the goods in the 100m on day two of the World University Games in Shenzhen, China, to secure Jamaica's first gold in the event at the games.

Harvey, a student at the University of Technology (UTech), also ensured that Jamaicans are the current champions in the 100m at every global championships of note, with Odean Skeen (Youth Olympics), Odail Todd (World Youth Championships), Dexter Lee (World Junior Championships) and Usain Bolt (Olympic Games and World Championships in Athletics) all holding intern tional 100m crowns.

The 22-year-old Harvey sped to a 10.14-second win, beating Lithuania's Rytis Sakalauskas in a photo finish after both had registered the same time. There was, however, some consolation for Sakalauska, who was running his personal-best time and also his country's national record.

China's Su Bingtian finished third for the bronze medal in 10.27 seconds, which was also the first athletics medal for the hosts at the 'Universiade'.

Former St Thomas Technical star and current UTech student Carrie Russell was also successful for the Jamaicans as she won the women equivalent in 11.05 seconds, equalling her personal best over the distance.

Khrystyna Stuy (UKR) was second in 11.34 while Lina Grincikaite (LTU) finished third in 11.44

Jamaica's tally

The results brought Jamaica's tally at the championships to three medals - all gold, this after Odayne Richards mined a historic gold medal in the shot put on the opening day of competition. Richards is also a student at the University of Technology.

In other results, Peter Matthews ran 46.27 for second place in his semi-final and a place in the 400m finals, which was scheduled for this morning at 6:55. Also in action tomorrow will be Jason Young and Rasheed Dwyer, who were scheduled to get their 200m campaign off and running at 9:45 last night; Annastasia Leroy and Anneshia Mclaughlin in the women's 200m (last night at 10); as well as Shermaine Williams and national champion Indira Spence in the women's 100m hurdles, was scheduled for 8:30 last night.
