National U-17 representative Cardel Benbow isn't the biggest, but don't be fooled by his size. He packs a heavy punch and his skills and goal-scoring ability are a testament to his achievements in the sport of football thus far. Benbow was a part of the Jamaica U-17 team that travelled to Mexico to play in the Youth World Cup, but bowed out in the first round with one point. The team's results included a 1-1 draw with France and two goals overall in the tournament, a first ever for an U-17 team at this level. Benbow, who plays for Portmore United in the Pines Imaging Centre-sponsored Portmore U-17 Football League, is looking for a successful stint with the Braeton-based club. "I am definitely looking to help and win the cup for Portmore United, it will be a great feeling to finally win my first U-17 title," Benbow told Star Sports. Benbow, 16, who attends St George's College, is arguably Portmore's best youth player and has been scoring goals at will, including six goals on the competition's opening day against a hapless Braeton United, who conceded 18 goals in that match. Today, at Ferdie Neita Park in Braeton, Benbow, with 15 goals under his belt this season, will take on Rodwood, a Waterford-based team, in the feature match of two semi-final clashes, at the Ferdie Neita Park. Portmore are expected to beat Rodwood. However, the opening game between surprise team Bridgeport and defending champions Wanderers can go either way. Portmore have won numerous titles, both at the junior and senior level. They have won the Premier League four times, two times as Hazard United and the other two times as Portmore United. They are defending champs of the U-15 league now sponsored by Colin Fagan, member of Parliament for South East St Catherine. |
