Head coach of Jamaica's 50-member team to the IAAF World Championships in Athletics in Daegu, South Korea, Maurice Wilson, is quite pleased with the selection and believes the team is good enough to eclipse the 13 medals won two years ago in Berlin, Germany.

"I think we can definitely do better than the last time, even though that was a peak performance for Jamaica," said Wilson, who last year led Jamaica's team to the Commonwealth Games in Delhi and has engineered Holmwood Technical's stranglehold on the national girls' championships.

improve medal count

"I definitely believe that we can improve on the medal count but it is indeed going to be very challenging," he added.

The Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association (JAAA) yesterday named a team consisting of 25 males and 25 females to represent the country at the August 27 to September 4 championships.

Defending 100m and 200m champion and world record holder Usain Bolt, national 400m record holder Jermaine Gonzales, national 110m record holder Dwight Thomas former record holder Asafa Powell, Yohan Blake, and Nesta Carter, are all listed.

Steve Mullings, who tested positive for a masking agent recently will not feature in Daegu as he get set to start answer doping charges next week.

Defending 100m champion Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, Veronica Campbell-Brown, defending 400m hurdles champion Melaine Walker, Kaliese Spencer, Kenia Sinclair and Novlene Williams-Mills will lead a powerful female unit.

"It's a good mix of experience and emerging talent and overall it augers well for the future of track and field in Jamaica," said Wilson, who left for Daegu early this morning, where he will meet up with members of the team at a pre-meet camp.

"It's indeed a privilege to serve my country and I am taking everything in stride. There is a very strong supportive staff and it's going to be an all-round team effort, and I'm certain that the entire management and technical staff will be up to the task," Wilson added.
