Nelson takes double at Downs

Tyrone Nelson

WINNIPEG, Manitoba (CMC):

Jamaican jockey Tyrone Nelson scored with a double on Wednesday's eight-race card at Assiniboia Downs, to go fifth in the jockeys' standings.

Nelson produced two similar front-running rides to capture race three with the favourite Dance the Dance and race six with another even-money bet, Mr Exspeedient.

He now has 22 wins, seven adrift of the fourth-place Mark Anderson, with David Lopez the runaway leader on 51 wins.

Going six furlongs in the day's third event, Nelson broke the four-year-old filly nicely and put her to the front, racing four lengths clear at the halfway mark.

unchallenged

He had opened up a lead of five lengths in the stretch and eased to the finish unchallenged by 3-1/4 lengths in a time of one minute, 12.20 seconds.

Nelson completed his brace with another dominant ride, going a mile in race six for the three-year-olds and upwards.

He duelled early on with Angelic Fiddler but dismissed him on the final turn to race to the finish, to win by 1-1/4 lengths in 1:39.40.

There were also wins on the day's card for Barbadians Juan Crawford and Chris Husbands.

Crawford won race one over 7-1/2 furlongs with the 5-1 bet Goody Two Shoes while Husbands scored in race seven with the favourite Mancini's Air Raid going six furlongs.
