Another Jamaican convicted for smuggling ganja

Yet another Jamaican who attempted to smuggle ganja into Barbados was convicted in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday.

Glenton Wright, 46,vendor of a Spanish Town, St Catherine, address was sentenced to six months in prison for taking preparatory steps to export ganja.

He was also fined $1,600 or three months for possession of ganja.

However, an additional charge of dealing in ganja was admonished and discharged.

According to police reports, on August 7 about 11:45 a.m., Wright was held at the Norman Manley International Airport after his shoes were searched and ganja was found hidden in each shoe.

Wright had arrived at the airport to board a Caribbean Airlines flight to Barbados when he was stopped, interviewed and searched by the police.

A search of his sneakers reportedly revealed an irregular shaped parcel wrapped with masking tape and transparent plastic containing vegetable matter resembling ganja taped to each shoe.

In recent times, several persons have been convicted by the court for attempting to smuggle contraband into Barbados.
