A man charged with 51 counts of breaches of the Copyright Act for selling illegal DVDs pleaded guilty and was fined $25,000 or 10 days' hard labour. He is Leighton Barrett, a 35-year-old labourer, of Spanish Town, St Catherine. When the matter came up in the Spanish Town Resident Magistrate's Court on Tuesday, Barrett pleaded guilty. Resident Magistrate (RM) Marcia Dunbar-Green then fined him $25,000 on each count to run concurrently or 10 days. The RM told the accused that the offence for which he is charged is very serious and that the maximum fine is $100,000 on each DVD. The court heard that Barrett was held by the police while he sold the illegal items. Attorney-at-law Earl Hamilton assisted the accused as a friend of court. |
