Fifty-year-old Patrick Powell, the businessman charged with the killing of 17-year-old Kingston College student Khajeel Mais, was remanded in the Home Circuit Court yesterday. He is to return to court on July 25. The matter had been transferred from the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court. However, the matter of failure to turn over firearm for inspection was set to be mentioned on September 26 in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court. A fingerprint order was made. THE WEEKEND STAR understands that all other matters have been transferred to the Home Circuit Court. On Wednesday, Powell, a businessman of Belgrade Loop, St Andrew, was charged by detectives from the Major Investigation Task Force (MIT) with murder, shooting with intent, illegal possession of firearm, illegal possession of ammunition and failure to produce firearm for inspection. Mais was shot dead on July 1, allegedly by the driver of a BMW X6, after the cab he was travelling in was involved in a minor accident with the SUV. It is alleged that the driver of the X6 became angry and retaliated by blocking the road and firing wildly into the taxi. Mais, who was reportedly shot in the head, later died at the Kingston Public Hospital. The taxi driver escaped injury. A funeral service for Mais was held last Saturday. |
