Griffiths aims to take charge

Newton, Singapore:

National netball player Anna-Kay Griffiths is hoping to take charge in the circle more often as she looks to shoot Jamaica's Sunshine Girls to glory at the Mission Foods World Netball Championships, currently under way in Singapore.

Griffiths was instrumental in the Oberon Pitterson-coached team's win over their Caribbean rivals T&T, as she shot 17 goals from 19 attempts, in a 79-42 win, which led to her being named the player of the game.

"I took charge inside the circle today and went for the ball. I made most of my shots and so we were able to win the game comfortably," she said.

"I am just going to continue taking my shots and listen to the coach's instructions, once I do that, then I know that I am going to be very successful on the court," Griffiths said.

I am feeling great

The players were delighted with her performance at the Indoor Centre.

"I am feeling great about this award because I have worked very hard coming into this championship and now the work is paying off for me," said the 23-year-old.

Griffith, who has never represented Jamaica at any level before, began her netball career at age 10 at Hazard Primary in Clarendon. She then went on to represent Denbigh High School in the Inter-Secondary Schools Sports Association netball competition.

The diminutive goal attack, who was also a member of the Windalco team, which finished fourth in the Berger Paints Super League competition earlier this year, said people can expect a lot more from her as the championship progresses.

"I am just going to continue to work very hard to improve my game so that whenever I play against teams, I can always make Jamaica proud of me," Griffiths stated.
