Lille, France:

After shaking off the cobwebs and securing safe passage to the 200m semi-final, 2010 Youth Olympics 100m gold medalist Odean Skeen is counting his blessings and expressing gratitude that he has shaken off a bothersome hamstring injury to be able to return to the track.

Skeen was originally expected to compete in the 100m, won by compatriot Odail Todd, but had to be pulled at the last minute because of a problems with his left hamstring, which forced the coaching staff here to rest him and hope that he would recover in time for the 200m.

"It's just a wonderful feeling to finally be able to compete, I have been waiting for quite a while now and I'm just happy to be back on the track," said Skeen after his win in the first round, which saw him recording a time of 21.75 seconds.

Skeen admitted to being a little bothered though by the chilly conditions but sought to assure that he has recovered enough fitness-wise and will be able to challenge for a medal at these championships.

"It was a little bit uncomfortable because it was very cold but I will adjust," said Skeen. "I am feeling fine, I will most definitely be able to go the rounds and challenge for a medal."

"I'm very happy to be here, it's an exciting experience, and I'm looking forward to the other rounds," he added.

"This year has been a rough year, but I'm always happy to represent my country, and I'm hoping to do well. As long as I'm on the medal podium I will be fine."

not too disappointed

The youngster was quick to point out that he was not too disappointed when he learned that he would be scratched from the 100m as a precautionary measure, as he was fully aware that the decision was taken with his best interest at heart.

"I didn't have any problems with the decision, I understand the situation and knew that it would give me enough time to rest the injury and try my best at the 200m. I wasn't really disappointed, as I said I understood the situation."
