women on ganja charge granted bail

Two women who were allegedly found with 182.6kg (88.5lb) of ganja at the Norman Manley International Airport recently were each granted $1 million bail with surety when they appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court on Thursday.

Ava-Dawn Bowen and Georgette Pitter, both of Windward Road, Kingston 2, are charged with possession of, dealing in, taking steps to export and conspiracy to export ganja and are to return to court on August 9.

As a condition of their bails, both women are to report every Wednesday between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. to the Elletson Road Police Station.

Both defendants also have to surrender their travel documents and stop orders were put in effect.

The liaison officer was also bound over in the matter.

The court was apprised that both women were accosted at the airport on June 25 at the cargo export area.

Both defendants reportedly arrived at the airport to export three cartons to Antigua. During security checks, irregularities were discovered.

As a result, the boxes were opened and each box were found to contain three rolls of suiting materials.

The materials were further examined and compressed vegetable matter resembling ganja was seized.

A total of $ 48,000 was also seized from Bowen.
