Daegu 200m gold on her mind |

Veronica Campbell-Brown, Jamaica's most successful athlete with 12 senior international medals to her name and many more accolades and accomplishments to go along with those, seems to have won it all, but there is one medal that has eluded her over her decorated career; something she intends to correct at this year's IAAF World Championships in Athletics, Daegu, South Korea. Campbell-Brown, a two-time Olympic 200m and 2007 World Championships 100m champion, has never won gold in the 200m at the World Championships level, as American Allyson Felix continues to dominate at the biennial championships over the distance. With victories over Felix at the 2004 and 2008 Olympics in Athens and Beijing, respectively Campbell-Brown is now looking to shake off the World Championships 200m jinx and secure that elusive gold medal. "You never know, Allyson (Felix) and I have been going back and forth where she wins all the World Championships and I win all the Olympics 200m, but you never know what the future holds and what can happen this year," said Campbell-Brown after her 200m victory on Sunday night at the Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association/Supreme Ventures Limited National Senior Cham-pionships inside the National Stadium. personal best Campbell-Brown won in 22.44 seconds ahead of Kerron Stewart, 22.63, and Sherone Simpson, 22.73; all three will represent Jamaica in the event in Daegu. At the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece, Campbell-Brown won ahead of Felix, in a then personal best of 22.05, to the American's world junior record timing of 22.18. In 2007, Felix, 21.81, turned the table on Campbell-Brown, 22.34 at the World Championships in Osaka, Japan, before the Jamaican bounced back a year later at the Beijing Olympic Games winning in her best time ever over the distance, 21.74 while the American finished second in 21.93. At the last World Championships in Berlin, Germany two years ago, Felix was back on her turf, winning in 22.02 while Campbell-Brown again finished second in 22.35. Despite the rivalry, Campbell-Brown is, however, not focusing all her attention solely on Felix. "For me, I'll just be training hard and I'm sure that Allyson and the other ladies will be coming hard as well but I'm just focused on ensuring that I am both mentally and physically ready to compete at my best ability, in Daegu," she stated. "I'm not only looking at Allyson because although she is a great competitor and I enjoy competing against her, there are others that have been doing well and will be coming strong this year, so I'm keeping my eyes on everyone and hoping and praying that I remain healthy," Campbell-Brown added before underlining that she will be paying equal attention to the 100m and the 200m at the World Championships. "I have to place equal focus on both events, they are unique in their own way and I love them both," said Campbell-Brown. |
