Curtis Campbell, STAR Writer
Many persons will remember the popular line 'Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday Bembe', from Voicemail's Bembe that was all over the dancehall in 2007. Once credited as one of the hottest parties in Kingston on a Thursday night, Bembe Thursdays faded for reasons which were unclear to partygoers. However, the weekly party was recently revived, under a new team at a new location in New Kingston, but according to Jiggsy, who was a resident DJ and member of the original Bembe Squad, the new party has not been the same because the chemistry that existed with the old Bembe Squad is not present. "The thing is the product is not authentic if the original Bembe Squad is not present, that's why it's not like the old Bembe," he told THE STAR. According to the out-spoken selector, he has no problem with the new promoters, however, he wishes that the old Bembe Squad was more involved in the product since they were the ones who made it a household name. "I only got a call once to play at the new Bembe and rain did fall and from that all now mi nuh get another call," he said. location The selector also said that he feels that one of the problem facing the event is the location. "The crowd has something to do with it, the one at Weekenz was more inner city, and this one is in the middle of Kingston and more uptight, if garrison people don't gravitate to it, it caan work," he postulated. According to Jiggsy he is still unclear as to what stopped the old Bemabe, this he blames on miscommunication among the different persons involved. "Mi only hear sey the name sell and it move, people all a mek joke wid mi a sey if mi sey Bembe mi wi get sue," he joked. Richie Feelings, another member of the original Bembe Squad, claims to be the one who created the name Bembe, only to find out that it was licensed and sold without his knowledge. "I don't know anything about it, and I only got an email stating that the name had been registered so I just avoid it," he said. "I am going to start my own thing it's summer so the situation is favourable," he told THE STAR. Irish and Chin, the camera personnel attached to the new Bembe, confirmed that the vibe wasn't the same, but also stated that it was building and only needed more promotions. And Boom Boom, one of the new Bembe selectors, says, "it's just the environment plus it just start, I feel like a lot of people don't even know about it yet," he said. Several attempts made to contact the new promoters proved futile, the Bembe Rebirth was held on April 7, 2011 at its new location at Escape in New Kingston. |
