RAYMOND GRAHAM, Star Writer

OLYMPIC 200 metres gold medallist Veronica Campbell-Brown closed the JAAA Supreme Ventures Senior National Championships in fine style last night, as following her 100 metres victory on Friday, she closed the meet by taking the sprint double as she sped away to victory in 22.34 seconds.

It was a battle royal for second between the fast starting Sherone Simpson and Kerron Stewart, with Stewart getting second in 22.63 seconds and Simpson booking her spot for Daegu, in third, with a time of 22.73 seconds to make up for her fourth-place finish in the 100 metres final.

Cambell-Brown was happy with the double title.

"First I must thank God for the victories and for taking me through the Championships injury free. Jamaica has some great set of athletes and to come out on top twice I am very elated," said Campbell-Brown, who is looking forward to her clash with Allyson Felix this summer in Daegu.

After his disappointment in the men's 100 metres where he was favoured to win the event, Steve Mullings ended the meet on a winning note as he got a flying start in the men's 200 metres to hold off his training partner Nickel Ashmeade to win in 20.10 seconds. Ashmeade (20.32) held on for second to hold off Racers Track Club's Mario Forsythe who was third in 20.36 seconds.

Defending champion Novlene Williams-Mills and Riker Hylton took the top spots in the 400 metres for women and men, respectively. In the first track final, the women's 400 metres, only seven athletes reported to the start as 400 metres hurdles champion Kaliese Spencer the fastest qualifier, failed to report for the start.

off to great start

Williams-Mills, in lane six, was off to a great start with Rosemarie Whyte, who ran out of lane five, tracking her well and Shericka Williams also well in touch. With Whyte taking a slight lead on the final straightaway she had a keen duel with Williams-Mills, but the stronger Williams-Mills prevailed in the end for her third successive national title. She won in a season best 50.05 as Whyte (50.45) was second with Williams third in 50.81 seconds.

Former St Jago High quarter-miler Hylton captured his first national title, as in a very competitive men's 400 metres final, he held on for a close win in 45.30 seconds. Following his win in the men's 400 metres hurdles final on Friday, Leford Green had another great run by finishing second in 45.46 seconds as former national champion Lansford Spence was third in 45.46 seconds. Favourite Jermaine Gonzales was fourth in 45.59 seconds.

There were two upsets in the women's and men's sprint hurdles as Indira Spence and Andrew Riley took top honours. In the women's 100 metres hurdles where world championships defending champion Brigitte Foster-Hylton did not report to the start, former Vere Technical athlete Spence got the better of veterans Vonette Dixon and Delloreen Ennis to win the event in 13.08 seconds as Dixon (13.12) and Ennis-London (13.13) seconds finished second and third, respectively.

The upset continued in the men's 110 metres hurdles as big favourite Dwight Thomas was surprised by former Calabar High hurdler Andrew Riley who took the event in a close finish in 13.36 seconds to get the better of Thomas who was second in 13.38 and Richard Phillips who ended third in 13.40 seconds.
