SHELDON WILLIAMS, STAR Writer A 47-year-old carpenter who was attacked by his common-law wife's former boyfriend and chopped several times in his face is now living in fear after his alleged attacker somehow walked out of the police station moments after he was arrested. Information reaching THE STAR is that the brazen attack on the couple took place about 8:30 p.m. last Friday at the intersection of Meadowbrook Avenue and Red Hills Road in full view of other persons. The man was chopped in his face fracturing his facial bone and on his hand as he tried to protect himself and his lover, At the same time,THE STAR understands that the attack was motivated by jealousy as the accused had been threatening the woman for a number of years after their relationship ended and she moved on with her life taking the child from that union with her. The injured man, Jerome Smith, told THE STAR that the accused "keep on threatening her. She go to a wholesale one day and him box her up and do all sort of things to her." shouting expletives He further explained that on the day of the incident, he was standing on the sidewalk with his girlfriend when the accused pounced on them shouting expletives. He allegedly used a machete to inflict wounds to the complainant's face and hand as he tried to protect himself. "This man just gimme dis hell of a chop inna me face, 37 stitches me get and four stitches inna mi hand," Smith recounted to THE STAR. Smith, who is now recovering at home, added that he is appreciative of the quick response of a police patrol car that was in the area at the time of the attack. " Just as him do it, police come pon the scene same time and take both of we go station" Smith told THE STAR. The woman had already escaped the attack unhurt by running to safety. Interestingly, THE STAR further understands that the accused is now being sought by the police after he allegedly walked out of the police station where he had been taken undetected after he had been arrested initially. However, checks with the sub-officer in charge of the police station in question revealed that he was not aware of the incident. Further preliminary checks conducted by him revealed that an official report about the incident was not logged in the station diary. Nonetheless, the senior cop took the opportunity to ask THE STAR to make contact with the complainant and advise him to visit the station at the soonest opportunity so that a report can be made and logged.
