MVP Track Club sprinter Nesta Carter has been knocking on the door of global sprinting success for a while but perhaps it's time for him to become a bit more forceful and just kick it in.

Carter, despite his world-leading 9.78 seconds exploits over the 100m last season, remains in the shadows of his more media-savvy compatriots Usain Bolt and Asafa Powell, but the 25-year-old is ready to step it up a bit and announce his position among the sport's finest.

Another objective that ranks highly on his 'to-do list' is the lowering of his personal best, an achievement that the former Manchester High man believes will add further credence to his abilities. "I am very confident about my own abilities and I am ready to take it to the next level and stay up there consistently with my times. Once I'm able to remain focused I will certainly continue improving," said the normally low-keyed Carter.

With a 9.92 seconds timing under his belt so far this season, Carter will line up at this weekend's Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association/Supreme Ventures National Senior Championships as the third fastest Jamaican this year behind Steve Mullings (9.80) and Bolt (9.91). "Nothing is impossible for me right now, once my mind is set I know I can achieve anything," said Carter of his ambitions. "I have been putting in a lot of training and hopefully it will pay off and I can go below that 9.78 this year, I'm really looking forward to doing that actually."

A bit surprised

"Last year was an exciting year for me because it wasn't a championship year so I went out there to work on a few stuff as a way to sharpen up for this year and the World Championships," he said. "I didn't really know that I could have gone 9.78 so quickly so to be honest I am a bit surprised." However, that was last season and a new year, with new challenges and new objective lie in wait. For Carter, it has certainly not been the best of starts to his season, in fact, he has been battling a pesky hamstring niggle, which saw him pulling out of a highly anticipated clash against American Tyson Gay at the Adidas Grand Prix in New York on June 11. "I'm just trying to reach that point of readiness as soon as possible."
