SPALDINGs High School's Simoya Campbell, the ISSA Boys and Girls' Championships 800 metres Class II winner and Carifta-Under 20 champion gave a fine display at yesterday's second and final day of the Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association/Supreme Ventures National Junior Champion-ships at the National Stadium.

Campbell raced to a personal best of 2:05.37 to capture the girl's under-18 event. The new kid on the block in the event this season, she continued her rapid improvement going from post to post for an easy win. Edwin Allen High's Marleena Eubanks was some way behind in second place in 2:08.61.

"I am very happy that I was able to come and do well at the Champion-ships because I have trained hard and although I wanted to run somewhere around 2:04 I am still pleased with the win," said Campbell.

Green Island High's Odail Todd, Kingston College's Rojeek Rochester, Holmwood Technical's Janieve Russell and Manchester High's Chanice Porter were all double winners after capturing their second event yesterday.

Todd, who on Saturday's opening day surprised World Youth Olympic 100 metres champion Odean Skeen in the 100 metes event, returned to score a second win over his rival in winning the 200 metres.

Both athletes came off the curve together and were in a tight battle, but, with less than 20 metres to go, Todd found the extra gear to pull off the win in 21.26 seconds. Skeen was timed in 21.31 seconds for the runner-up spot as Jevaughn Minzie once again had to settle for third in 21.76 seconds.

convincing win

Rochester gaining some confidence after winning the Boys under-20 1500 metres on Saturday returned for a convincing win in the 800 metres event yesterday as he pulled away from his rivals to take the event in 1:54.84.

Holmwood Technical's Andre Hosey was second in 1:55.85.

World Junior representatives Russell and Porter continued their impressive form as both had good victories yesterday. Russell who used the meet to warm up for the Heptathlon and who took the under-20 long jump on the opening day with 6.19 metres in a positive wind of 3.17 metres per second, turned back a good field in the girl's under-20 200 metres.

Running out of lane eight, the multi-talented Russell got the better of Racers Track Club Celia Walters by taking the event in 24.26 seconds. Walters (24.44) was second with Wolmer's Girls' Cardine Copeland coming in third in 25.08 seconds.

Porter, who is highly ranked in both the long and high jump at the World Youth level, showed that she is in great form ahead of the World Youth Championships, as after taking the under-18 high jump with 1.80 metres, returned to capture the long jump event with an impressive 6.35 metres.

Unfortunately for her there was no wind gauge reading for her result.

In yesterday's first final on the track the girl's under-17 100 metres hurdles, Chrisdale McCarthy of St Jago High and Megan Simmonds of St Andrew High continued their friendly rivalry in the event. At the start it was the pint-sized Simmonds who got her usual fast start to lead, but the more powerful McCarthy caught her with two flights of barriers to go and pulled away for a good win in 13.95 seconds.

Holmwood Technical's Chris-Ann Gordon avenged her Carifta Games under-20 defeat by returning to winning ways. Gordon turned back Vere Technical's Olivia James in the under-18 400 metres to win the event in 52.65 seconds. James despite her strong finish had to settle for second in 53.30 seconds.
