Brit jailed for drugs |

|
A British national was sentenced to 18 months' imprisonment in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court on Tuesday. He is 48-year-old Derek Brown, scaffolder, from a London, England address. Brown was fined $100,000 or six months for possession of; $200,000 or six months for dealing in and $250,000 or six months for taking steps to export cocaine. In addition, he was also fined $100 or 30 days for possession of ganja, $200 or 30 days for dealing in ganja and $500 or 30 days for taking steps to export ganja. Brown was also given an additional 18 months' imprisonment. If the fines are not paid, the prison times are to run concurrently, but consecutive to the 18 months. Allegations are that on March 23, about 4:50 p.m., the accused was apprehended at the Norman Manley International Airport after he was searched and a package containing cocaine found in his groin. It is alleged that the accused handed over a stocking that was wrapped in transparent plastic containing 59 cylindrical parcels. The cocaine weighed one pound, reportedly. According to the police, the accused later confessed to ingesting a quantity of cocaine and ganja packages. He was taken to the Kingston Public Hospital for medical examination. The accused allegedly expelled 16 pellets of cocaine and two ganja pellets. |
