'Project Jungle Gym' a success

As Razz and Biggy played Delilah from the speakers, the sound of laughter and happy screams seemed to be in tandem with the beat and made its way to the ears. The eyes were greeted with the smiling faces of children and a sense of euphoria swept the area.

As it neared Marc Ramsay's birthday, he made a decision to tell people not to give him anything, but only asked for help to arrange 'Project Jungle Gym', a treat for the children of the Maxfield Park Children's Home.

And he did get help as several persons donated items and money to the worthy cause - a 'funday' for the children of the home.

And what more could be a fitting treat for them than the 'Real McKoy', Mavado, who many of them seemed to admire from the way they clung to him.

"A lot of people, including Mavado came on-board, him and his manager were very excited about it. They bought a jungle gym and a slide, and as you can see, the kids are already very excited about it," said Ramsay who spearheaded the project.

He continued, "A lot of people came onboard and gave money, paint and other stuff to put together to have this funday."

The promotional campaign for the treat was done via BlackBerry messenger, and Ramsay went on to say that he was glad that Mavado contacted him to come on-board.

"We always want to do things like these. My manager come to me and seh Maxfield Park Children's Home want some help an if there is any likkle thing we can do for them. Right away, wi just ready to deal wid it because it's all about giving back for all weh wi a get," Mavado told The STAR.

He continued, "It's good to give back and I think this is one of the best ways to give back something, because each one of dem kids here right now feel a joy inna demself, so as we seh, the more yuh give the more yuh get, wi just a do wah we can do."

As he interacted with the children in the play area, a subtle joy could be seen on Mavado's face as he took pictures, spoke with and hugged the children.

"Mi feel happy, everybody have something inna dem hand. Is a great feeling because memba wi a come from nothing to something an wi never know . one a these likkle baby probably a di next prime minister, the next doctors, the next teachers. Probably dem a come teach my kids, anyting can happen," he said.

Apart from the funday, a mural was painted in the nursery, a door for the computer lab was bought and is to be installed and a jungle gym and a slide were added to the play area.

It is not Ramsay's first time working with homes as he has done so with others in Jamaica and in Haiti, and, according to him, he is already thinking about what to do next.

Mavado also plans to continue his efforts as he says, "Wi planning on continuing to help the home with a lot more things. Mi jus deh ya a look because mi jus guh roun deh so guh look pon some kids, some baby dem a like between five months, six months, one year an couple months, an dem nuh really have nuh mother and father, so wi jus a do all wi can do."
