Highgate, Seba almost there

Little-knowN Highgate are poised to confirm a spot in the Digicel Premier League next season, should they secure a victory over joint-leaders Seba at Gray's Inn, St Mary, as the JFF All-Island Confederation play-off enters the penultimate round tomorrow.

Highgate, who beat Cavalier 2-0 away from home in their last encounter, are out front with 8 points, the same as Seba, who got the better of Rivoli. A win for the Eastern Confederation Champions would lift them to an unassailable 11 points with just one game remaining. Despite coming into the competition as a relatively unknown quantity, the St Mary team, led by striker Roen Nelson, dominated play in a first-round encounter at Jarrett Park, and in fact only a late free kick by veteran Iton Scott saved a point for the home team.

A similar result would not be a disaster for either team as they are currently comfortably ahead of Cavalier (4 points) and an already eliminated Rivoli (1 point).

Cavalier are still in with a slim chance of advancing but must take all three points when they tackle Rivoli at the Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex in the day's other game. The Kingston and St Andrew champions did manage to get the better of Cavalier in their first-round encounter at the Spanish Town Prison Oval but were gifted an own goal by Rivoli's Brandon Bennett.

Rivoli, although coming into the qualifiers as one of the favourites, have really failed to spark and so far managed to secure only one point from four games.

The Spanish Town team took a point on the road against the leaders, before losing to Seba, Cavalier and then Highgate again in their second-round match-up. Although out of the running, the Calvert Fitzgerald team should be looking to at least end a disappointing campaign on a good note.
