Cop gets two-year suspended sentence |

|
The policeman who discharged his weapon in a crowd injuring two persons in 2007 was given a two-year suspended sentence in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court. He is Constable Alexley Smith, who was attached to the Hunts Bay Police Station in St Andrew. Smith was sentenced to two years at hard labour following his conviction on a charge of unlawful wounding. However, the magistrate suspended the sentence for two years. a stabbing incident Allegations are that on March 13, 2007, Constable Smith and a team of policemen went into the Majestic Gardens community to assist a family to move out of the area following a stabbing incident. It is alleged that during the process, a large crowd gathered and began hurling expletives at the cops. It is further alleged that the policeman discharged his firearm in the air in a bid to disperse the crowd and a bullet struck two bystanders. It is reported that one of the victim's left arm is now disabled. In the meantime, Smith, who had denied the allegation, is to appeal his conviction and sentence. |
