Powell to run in Rabat

ap - Asafa Powell

LONDON, England (CMC):

Jamaican Asafa Powell will be one of the headliners at next month's Meeting Inter-national Mohammed VI d'Athlétisme in Morocco.

The 28-year-old will be the marquee runner in the 100 metres field on June 5 where he will clash with fellow Jamaican Michael Frater, a member of the successful sprint relay side at the Beijing Olympics in 2008.

Powell's appearance in Rabat, the country's capital, will mark the first time he has ever run on African soil.

Meet organisers are expecting Powell to break the meet record of 10.30 seconds set by Ronald Pognon two years ago.

Powell launched his international season in style at the Shanghai Diamond League last Sunday, clocking a breezy 9.95 seconds to win the 100 metres.

The IAAF World Challenge meeting will also see high jump World champion Blanka Vlasic in action, and she is expected to lock horns with former Olympic champion Yelena Slesarenko of Russia.
