Villa United emerged the 2011 Manchester FA Division Two champions following their 1-0 win over Cobbla/Gully Strikers in the final played at the Mile Gully Sports Complex. Derron Morgan provided the game's lone strike, booting home from a six-yard scramble, with just two minutes remaining in regulation time. Villa's victory was secured after a second attempt after the previous week the rain had washed out the final, which they were leading 1-0. Division Two is sponsored by Power Services Company Limited to the tune of $700,000 with Villa pocketing $50,000 and the losers $30,000. However, the championship win provided automatic promotion to the FA's Major League. Both Villa and Cobbla/Gully Strikers were unlikely finalists at the start of the competition. Both were beaten in the preliminary stage although Villa emerged a zone winner and Cobbla/Gully Strikers making the semi-finals as the best overall zone runner-up team. However, they toppled the favourites in the semi-finals. Romaine Johnson's 54th-minute strike proved decisive in Villa's 1-0 win over Hopewell, who had gone unbeaten previously without conceding a goal in four matches. Cobbla/Gully Strikers recorded a 3-1 win over Allied, who also put together a four-game winning streak. |
