Hermoso to cash Lotto ticket
Jimmie, Star Racing Writer

NOEL ENNEVOR's HERMOSO AMIGO will be a tough horse to beat with only 53.0 kilos in tomorrow's Lotto Classic for the Governor's Cup.

Drawn at post-position six in the 14-horse field, the Noel Ennevor-trained runner stamped his class on April 16 by decimating rivals in 1:58.2 for 1820 metres.

He is the only horse in the race to have twice won at a distance of ground and has blinding backstretch pace, which none of his peers have been able to follow going two turns.

Although he hadn't faced any of the classic-winning three-year-olds in his three races, HERMOSO AMIGO is the real deal.

A mark of confidence must be owner Wessel Burnett and veteran trainer Ennevor's decision to stick with non-claiming apprentice Doushane Gordon for the big $3.55m race.

With 2000 Guineas winner BIG MAN BOYU opting not to face HERMOSO AMIGO with topweight, the next-best classic-placed horse in tomorrow's line-up is Patrick Lynch's JUSTIN ON FIRE, who was second in the Guineas.

However, due to his second-place run in the Guineas, JUSTIN ON FIRE has been listed with 57.0 kilos, handing him a tall order to test HERMOSO AMIGO at 53.0.

Whereas JUSTIN ON FIRE represents classic form, Anthony Nunes' TECHNOMOTO must be watched as a springer.

He raced into the Governor's Cup picture with a four-length win at 1820 metres on May 4, stopping the clock at 1:57.4 - three-fifths of a second faster than the 1:58.2 posted by HERMOSO AMIGO on April 16.

TECHNOMOTO's performance and winning time put him in good stead for a showdown with HERMOSO AMIGO.

Following a disappointing loss behind American-bred KROLL, SIR SOUTH and stablemate INVICTUS on April 23, TECHNOMOTO returned to the exercise track, minus his blinkers, and breezed five furlongs in 1:00.4, dumbfounding all who had backed him six days earlier.

The railbirds said TECHNO-MOTO's turnaround in form did not surprise them one bit as he had undergone an equine dental procedure close to the April 23 race. Others claim it was the removal of the blinkers that did the trick.

On his performance at 1820 metres, TECHNOMOTO could be the only surprise HERMOSO AMIGO has to contend with.

For HERMOSO AMIGO to be threatened, speedsters such as MAAS LAURIE, SWEET TRAIL and JET SETTER will have to take him on early, to their detriment, for stayers such as COLD GROUND to try running on in the straight.

Lynch said his COLD GROUND will love the distance but he won't be sacrificing JUSTICE ON FIRE.

"Whenever you have a leader, the only way to shut him down is pressure him. When you run races like these, you run horses to win. I don't believe you should put horses in races to kill another horse. If you pace him, you can never tell what he'll do," he pointed out.

"It would be good to have somebody to go with him. I will try to see how I can match strides with him, that's my race plan, not to take him on to burn him out.
