VENDORS PROFIT FROM OSAMA KILLING

PAULA GORDON, STAR Writer

Weeks after the death of America's most wanted man Osama bin Laden, THE WEEKEND STAR has learnt that Jamaican bootleg DVD sellers are profiting from the sale of a documentary on his life.

Information reaching THE WEEKEND STAR is that the sellers who ply their trade in the Portmore, St Catherine, area, are now packaging a documentary that aired on the United States cable network station ABC. The programme is a 20/20 documentary 'Kill Shot: The Story Behind bin Laden's Death'.

When checks were made at the Portmore Mall on Wednesday, only one seller was seen selling the DVDs.

Kevinwho says he has sold more than 20 copies since bin Laden's death told THE WEEKEND STAR that he decided to put the documentary on DVDs and sell them because it is something of great importance.

"Well mi see it as something of significance, people wah see it and not everybody have access to the Internet," he reasoned.

He also explained that people should be made aware of the circumstances surrounding the death of the former al-Qaida leader.

On the other hand, Tony* who also sells DVDs in the area but decided against the bin Laden documentary said that he didn't see the significance in selling them.

"Whey me a sell it fah, nobody nuh care bout bin Laden him shoulda dead long time. If a did Michael Jackson dead again yea mi woulda sell dat," he remarked.

Interestingly, however, not long after a man walked up and requested one of the bin Laden DVDs. When he asked about the cost, he was told that they were being sold for $100.

Osama bin Laden, the glowering mastermind behind the September 11, 2001, terror attacks that killed thousands of Americans, was killed in an operation led by the United States earlier this month.

Despite profiting somewhat from his death Kevinsays that the DVD business has not been fruitful in recent times. He outlined that there is too much competition for it to be profitable.
