YEAH, I'M BACK ONSTAGE IN 'UN ...'! |
|||||
with Blakka Ellis Hey lovers of laughter and connoisseurs of out-of-the-box theatre, guess what! I'm unleashing my one-man-theatre-comedy-variety-show this Labour Day weekend. Di show name 'Un ...' and is strictly it mi a big up inna mi box today. Unapologetically! OK, so yes I'll be doing comedy, and yes, I did say I retired. Yeah, everybody and their nosey neighbour know that I announced in April 2009 that I was retiring from performing on public events in Jamaica as a stand-up comic. Well, this week Friday, at Centrestage in New Kingston I will 'un' retire. Ah wah? unplugged And I have not worked as an actor on a Jamaican stage since I did 'Tings a Gwaan' in 2004 and then took an indefinite break. Well this weekend I will definitely 'un-break' and spill my guts. And trust me, it will be unplugged, uncensored, uninhibited, and unparalleled. Some previously untold stories and few hitherto untouched issues will get exposed and explored when I unveil some of the ideas bubbling up in my slightly unstable mind, so good peeps I'm inviting all of unnu who are on the rock to join me as I get unruly. Why 'Un ...'? There is great fun and much learning to be derived from experiences that take an unaccustomed or untried approach. 'Un' is commonly used as a prefix added to adjectives or verbs. In the case of adjectives (or participles and their derivatives) the 'un' denotes an absence of a quality or state; like saying politicians are unscrupulous, (which is far from an unpopular position). Another example is 'Blakka is unaffectionate - which would really be terribly untrue! In the case of a verb, 'un' denotes the reversal or cancellation of an action or state, like unmasking myths, or undoing some outdated forms or unsettling things - and I will certainly do some of that in the show. Yes, I'm a wannabe rebel and I, admittedly, delight in creating intellectual disruption. I also love the unusual and I usually try to do things in an unconventional manner. And I love the unpredictable! 'Un ...' is a new series that aims to showcase performers in previously untried formats. Dr Michael Abrahams and Donald 'Iceman' Anderson are slated to appear soon. And you may actually see an unprecedented appearance by Fancy Cat or Ity (unaccompanied by each other). But I'm starting the madness. So yu must come yu hear! Come contribute to my therapy, enjoy the vibes and absorb the experience. The theatre not very hard to full-up, so unoccupied seats will be unacceptable. Let me hasten to warn you though, that seriously speaking, seats are limited and tickets are going fast and furious so some people who wait till it too late to buy may end up being very unhappy. Oh and by the way, free tickets are unavailable. box-mi-back@hotmail.com |
