Former Jamaica all-rounder Lyndel 'Muddy' Wright was last night elected the 11th president of the Jamaica Cricket Association after polling 55 votes to businessman Paul Campbell's 35 at the association's annual general meeting held at the Wyndam hotel yesterday.

Wright, who is the brother of former West Indies batsman Collie Smith, will thus head the running of the country's cricket affairs for the next two years.

Wright, who was Campbell's first vice-president, said he was elated to be elected, and hoped that throughout his tenure he will be able to galvanise the support of all Jamaicans to make cricket the country's number one sport again.

"I am proud to be elected the new president of the association," he said.

"Jamaica's cricket has been struggling for the past couple of years, and it is my hope that under my leadership me and my team, that has been elected unopposed, will be able to turn things around."

"It's a lot of hard work, but we are committed to the cause, and hopefully with the help of all cricket loving Jamaicans we will be able to get it right."

Campbell, whose reign as president included numerous regional cricket titles at senior, junior, women's and visually impaired levels, but throughout his tenure he had to contend with numerous allegations of financial impropriety, none of which were ever proven, said he was proud to have led the association, and despite being saddened by the fact that he was not given a second chance, wished Wright all the best.

"I am disappointed that things ended the way they did, as I was looking forward to building on the accomplishments of the administration over the past two years," said Campbell.

"But I guess not all the delegates were satisfied with the results and as such they voted accordingly. I want to thank those who supported me and wish Mr Wright all the best."

Wright, in the meantime, in carrying out his duties, will have all of his nominated executives to work with, as in light of the Campbell defeat, all were elected unopposed due to the en bloc withdrawal of Campbell's executive nominees.

Wright's executive will thus read, Dr Donovan Bennett (first vice-president), Melton Henry (second vice-president), Fritz Harris (secretary), Ian Brown (assistant secretary), Major Radcliffe Daley (treasurer), Maurice Clarke (assistant treasurer).
