Unemployed man charged with extortion pleads not guilty
An unemployed man charged with extortion and receiving stolen property pleaded not guilty to the charges and was remanded when he appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court on Tuesday.

He is Roderick Burnett, 34, from a Bedford Street, Kingston 5, address. Burnett is to return to court on June 23 for trial.

Allegations are that on Friday May 6 about 8 p.m., the complainant who is an attorney from Canada was robbed of valuables including her Canadian passport along Eastwood Park Road, St Andrew.

According to court documents, the complainant was approached by the accused who asked her to assist him with several phone calls. Armed with a knife, he allegedly robbed the complainant then made his escape.

Further allegations are that the complainant began calling the numbers the accused previously called from her phone and realised that one of them was his phone.

He struck up a conversation and demanded that she pay him $25,000 for the return of the passport.

The court heard that arrangements were made for the complainant and the accused to meet at Burger King in Half-Way Tree, St Andrew.

The court also heard that on Monday May 9 about 2:15 p.m., while waiting at the location, the complainant was approached by the accused. He was apprehended by the police and the passport was found in his possession.

When cautioned he allegedly said, "Offica mi cyan do nutten fi meself, mi already deh pan bail fi some gun charge."
