RM writes to police commissioner

A murder accused who has not seen the doctor for the seven months despite being remanded for psychiatric evaluation has prompted Marcia Dunbar-Green to write to the commissioner of police.

The accused in question is Theodore West, 27-year-old labourer of McCook's Pen district, St Catherine.

The Resident Magistrate made the declaration in court on Tuesday after defence attorney Courtney Maxwell complained about the recalcitrance of the police.

''Your Honour, for months we've been coming here and the order for my client to see the doctor is not being complied with, and a proper bail application cannot be made as a result,'' Maxwell said.

After making inquiries for the book which shows if persons are taken for medical attention, it was revealed that the accused was not taken.

''This cannot be allowed to happen. This case was brought before the court in November. The court constantly makes the order for psychiatric evaluation. He is yet to see the doctor, I am asking the clerk to write the commissioner of police and copy it to the superintendent,'' Dunbar-Green said.

She revealed that while there are other incidents, West's case showed glaring non-compliance on the part of the St Catherine North police. West will be brought back to court on June 24, when the case will again be mentioned.
