Shopkeeper sentenced to three months' hard labour

Philip Jones, a 45-year-old shopkeeper, was sentenced to three months' hard labour after being convicted of ganja charges in the Spanish Town Resident Magistrate's Court on Tuesday.

Jones and Kemeisha Thompson were brought before the court on charges of possession of, dealing in and using premises to sell ganja.

Jones pleaded guilty to the offences, while the Crown withdrew the charges against Thompson.

The allegations are that a police party conducted a raid at the accused premises in Braeton, Portmore, St Catherine.

During the operation, a search was conducted and a large quantity of ganja was found inside the house along with money totalling $63,500.

Jones told the court that while he sold the drug at a shop he ope-rated, he did not sell it from his house, hence he did not think he was guilty of using his premises for that purpose.
