PATRONS INJURED IN CHAOS AT PLAY
PAULA GORDON, STAR Writer

What was supposed to be a special feature for Mothers' Day turned into chaos on Sunday as three persons were injured when there was a disturbance in the large crowd that turned out to see a play at the Wyndham hotel in St Andrew.

Information reaching THE STAR is that thousands of patrons flocked the hotel in order to see the well anticipated Stages Production play, Ova Mi Dead Body, featuring well-known actress Delcita.

THE STAR understands that about 5 p.m., a fight broke out between two patrons while they were waiting to get into the venue.

Allegations are that the fight broke out as patrons grew impatient due to the long wait to be seated in the venue. This is alleged to have resulted because the turnout had exceeded expectations.

muddled crowd

THE STAR further understands that the promoters had to seek the assistance of the police in order to take control of the muddled crowd.

When contacted the New Kingston police confirmed the incident adding that they were able to bring order to the situation in order for the play to get under way.

However, a representative from Stages Production Limited told THE STAR yesterday that there was no stampede but the patrons were restive and uncooperative.

"Everyone wanted to come in at the same time, the people were even pushing down the police and at one point we had to close the door," he said.

He explained that about 1,500 persons had turned out for the 5 p.m. show for which there were over 1,700 chairs. Further, he noted that about 1,500 tickets were printed.

"Everybody got a seat, no one was hurt, just that everybody wanted to go in one time," the representative said.
