Supa Soka J'Ouvert filled with high energy

( l - r ) Beenie Man, Machel Montano - File

Water, paint, and the high-energy level of patrons and performers were the highlights of All-Island Carnival's Supa Soka J'Ouvert held last Friday.

When The STAR arrived at the Urban Development Corporation field at midnight, the venue was already half full with patrons still streaming inside.

The deejay played songs like Come To Meh, Palance and Expose, giving patrons a small taste of what was to come later.

"Mi nuh waan see nuhbody stan up in ya!" shouted the deejay as he introduced Let Me See Yuh Hand.

He spun songs such as Wotless and had women going 'dung di road' with men close behind to Woman By My Side.

Upon ZJ Sparks' introduction of Beenie Man to the stage, patrons let out ear-splitting screams. Clad in blue and yellow, Beenie Man thoroughly entertained patrons with hit after hit.

"Wave sumting suh!" shouted Beenie as he demonstrated how, while singing Pickney Nah Hold Yu Dung.

Then songs like Gimme Gimme and Eva Clean followed before he stopped to crack a joke with the ladies saying, "Yuh have some ladies who caan walk in Victoria Secret because dem secret is already out there!"

When he later asked patrons if he could leave they shouted, "No!"

"Mi tired mi waan gah mi yaad," he said while sitting on the stage.

He ended his fine set with his hits Rum And Red Bull and I'm Ok as patrons sang along.

The night's main attraction was by far the best, however, as Machel Montano reminded fans why he is one of Trinidad's top soca artistes.

Upon his entrance to the stage, he immediately went into Advantage, blazing a soca fire throughout the venue. Patrons could feel the heat as they waved bandanas vigorously.

He paused to ask, "Anybody from Barbados, Anybody from Trinidad, Anybody from Jamaica?" before continuing to delight patrons.

Telling them to "charge", they executed his instructions as they ran about the venue.

His soca selections were well received by patrons as they jumped, danced and pranced to the beat. They seemed to be enjoying every second of it.

He introduced a few soca artistes to the stage and they joined him in thrilling patrons with several soca hits.

Montana went out just as he had come in - with the loud, high-energy vocals of Advantage.

"Put your han in the air! Turn it round and round! Advantage! Advantage!"he shouted, while leaving the stage, bringing an end to what was a wonderful performance at Supa Soka J'Ouvert.
