FROM NOTHING TO EVERYTHING! |

![]() with Blakka Ellis From anything and nothing, to everything and more things; yeah man. That's how my warped brain works! Last week mi neva want fi write or talk 'bout anything, so I basically said something about a couple of things, and told you almost everything about nothing. Well, if last week my brain was buzzing with nothing, then this week it's bubbling with everything. Aheee peeps, what a thing! First of all, have you ever wondered how strange this world is sometimes? It's clear to me that God has a massive sense of humour. How else do you explain the stereotype-busting reality of the following facts? 1. One of the world's top golfers is black. 2. Two of the hottest rap artistes in the world - Eminem and Matisyahu - are white. And one's an orthodox Jew! 3. One of the tallest basketball players in the world, Yao Ming, is Chinese. 4. There's a Jamaican artiste who gained celebrity status even though he's never written a song. He only writes on walls! When I think 'bout dem thing deh, what can I say? What a world! Then now, these past few days I observed some interesting happenings. I read, heard and saw news that made me feel like the world is not so bad after all; maybe! 1. I hear that Bounty Killer delivered a seamless set at the recent Western Consciousness show, that included no misogynistic or badman lyrics - just strictly roots and culture! And his former arch-rival Beenie Man who came onstage afterwards actually commended the Killer on his splendid performance. 2. Controversial DJ Vybz Kartel has announced his decision to stop doing violent, 'badman' gun lyrics. What a move! 3. I also read that the witty and prolific lyricist Kiprich invited a member of the audience to join him onstage for a move or two during a recent performance, and when he discovered that the young miss who volunteered was underage, he promptly sent her away. The young lady's mother was so impressed that she publicly praised Kiprich for his responsible action. And number 4. (Fanfare) and now...wait for it...the fearsome Osama bin Laden is dead! (Or so dem say). So Bush and Clinton didn't, but Obama dweet. What a feat! Yes, friends, the US has announced that they've killed their most-wanted foe, and buried him at sea. The week before that, some silly people in his own country forced Obama to show them his birth certificate. Bet you the world they'll soon be demanding that him show dem Osama's death certificate, or photographic proof of the death. Look here nuh, when I put it all together, all I can say is 'OMG, what a week!' uncivilised Still though, just to poke little something in this hell-of-a everything, I felt a tad disturbed at seeing people cheering and partying in response to the announcement of death. I know that it's been established that he's the mastermind behind the killing of many, so it's OK to feel a sense of justice being served. But cheering the death of anybody, even the most heinous criminal, seems a little less than a civilised and enlightened response to me, and that sentiment is aptly inscribed in the words of Martin Luther King Jr posted on Facebook by Margaret Orane: "I mourn the loss of thousands of precious lives, but I will not rejoice in the death of one, not even an enemy. Returning hate for hate multiplies hate, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that. Box-mi-back@hotmail.com. |
