Jeweller faces court

A Jeweller who is accused of breaching the metal and jewellery act after he was found in possession of a quantity of jewellery stolen from Tropical Jewellers in Kingston on April 6, was brought before the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday.

The accused, Jade Abrahams, 33, from a St Catherine address, is charged with receiving stolen property and changing the form or shape of secondary jewellery.

He pleaded not guilty to the charges and was remanded until May 25.

Allegations are that about 2:30 p.m., on the day of the robbery, the accused bought stolen items from Winston 'One Son' Harris, a man implicated in the heist.

On April 8, the police arrested Harris after which he pointed out Abrahams as the person who he had sold some of the rings stolen from the jewellery store.

The accused was later arrested and charged after he was unable to account for five rings found in his possession.

Further allegations are that Abrahams told the police that he had melted the jewellery that he bought from Harris.

Meanwhile, Superintendent Cornwall 'Bigga' Ford, from the Flying Squad, told the court that he is opposed to bail because about two hours after the robbery the accused, "bought about $200,000 worth of jewellery and he melted the jewellery after receiving a phone call. Other persons are in custody and we are pursuing to charge him with some of these people."
