MILLION DOLLAR WINNER NOT DEAD - False claim spread quickly over weekend
Crystal Harrison, Star Writer

The rumour that has been circulating that the woman who won $1 million from Telecom-munications giant Digicel's 10th anniversary promotion has been found dead has turned out to be a Good Friday hoax.

THE STAR understands that the rumour which started on Friday via the internet was circulating up to as late as yesterday; this, after Digicel and the police dismissed it.

Last Tuesday, 11 Digicel customers won a million dollars each to commemorate the company's 10th anniversary.

The event, which was broadcast live on television, gave the public an opportunity to see the woman in question, as she was the only winner who was picked from the live studio audience during the celebrations.

In the meantime, Digicel and the police have dismissed the rumour.

When contacted, Senior Super-intendent James Forbes, head of the Police Community and Safety Branch, yesterday told THE STAR that, "it is officially a rumour; as to whether or not organisations should publicise information like that, it is time for Jamaicans to stop allowing criminals to dictate to us. In the United States of America lotto winners are celebrated."

In the meantime, when asked if he has any idea as to the whereabouts of the rumour, the senior cop said, "I dont know where it came from." He encouraged companies to feel free to do promotions and "not be daunted by careless people."

When contacted by THE STAR, Jacqueline Burrell-Clarke, Public Relations Manager at Digicel, Jamaica, added yesterday that the rumour has been dismissed.

According to a statement issued by the company, "Digicel is aware of the rumours and takes this very seriously as the safety of our customers is our number-one priority. We have reached out to the customer in question and have verified that she is safe."
