INDECOM wants increase in upcoming budget |

By June 1, 2011, the Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) will nearly triple the number of investigators to thirty-one, spread between Kingston Mandevile and Montego Bay. A release from the office said this is why the proposed increase of INDECOM's budget from just under $38 million for 2010-2011 to just over $200 million for the coming fiscal year 2011-2012. Presently INDECOM has eleven investigators, nine in Kingston and two in Montego Bay, to take on the well over 300 cases of security forces killings annually, plus other reports involving injury, loss of property or damage reported against the police, military and correctional services. Commissioner of INDECOM, Terrence Williams said, "The increased number of investigators is far less than what is needed but INDECOM will have to make do in seeking to clear the many cases and adequately discharge its mandate." The release said the proposed budgetary allocation falls well short of the $400 million requested. This has forced INDECOM to drastically curtail the number of investigators and administrative staff it had proposed to hire. |
