PEE AT YOUR OWN RISK - 689 persons arrested for urinating in public since the start of the year |

By SHELDON WILLIAMS, STAR Writer Authoritities have significantly stepped up the prosecution of persons who are caught red-handed urinating in areas not designated for such acts. Numerous persons are being brought before the courts after being fined for such matters as offenders continue to urinate in places such as sidewalks, roadways, and walls, among others on a daily basis. THE STAR understands that at least 689 persons have faced the courts between January and March, and the numbers for April are growing. The numbers are reported to be significantly higher than previous years. Enforcement officers attached to the National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA) are entrusted with the responsibility to prosecute such offenders. Commercial services manager for the NSWMA, Richard Bowes, explained to THE STAR that such offenders are prosecuted for breaches of the National Solid Waste Management Act and Public Cleanliness Regulation of 2003. On the other hand, he emphasised that there are preventative measures in place to deter potential offenders. He listed "public education, posting of anti-litter signs and monitoring of 'hot spots' areas of illegal dumping," as such measures. He also outlined that, "The offence attracts $2,000 per breach but the court is empowered to impose fines at its discretion for breaches by companies for offences under the act." In the meantime, there is reported to be a significant number of warrants being issued for the arrests of persons who miss their court dates. . |
