Bolt a doubt for JAMAICA Invitational - Powell poised for return |

Robert Bailey, Star Writer
Jamaican sprint sensation Usain Bolt is a major doubt for next month's Jamaica Invitational track and field meet after sustaining a mild setback during his training routine. There is little doubt that the performance of the double world record holder, over both the 100m and 200m, was one of the highlights of last years meets and patrons would certainly have been looking forward to seeing the sprint king in action. Over the 200m last year, Bolt sprinted to an awesome 19.56, the fourth-fastest time ever recorded over the distance in front of a full National Stadium. "Usain (Bolt) has had a mild setback in his training and his coach had asked us to give him some time for them to make a decision whether he will compete or not," Quarrie said during yesterday's press launch of the eighth staging of this year's meet, which was held at the Wyndham hotel in New Kingston. impressive Bolt's rival American Tyson Gay, who also clocked an impressive 45.05 over 400m at last year's meet, has also not yet been confirmed as negotiations with his camp are still ongoing. "We are still waiting to hear from Tyson if he will run the 200m or the 400m, as you know last year he decided one week before the meet that he will compete in the 400m," Quarrie said. "I know that he is leaning a bit towards the 200m and if he does, then that should be a very interesting event. However, despite Bolt and Gay being unconfirmed, the meet it is expected to have several top stars on show, with quite a few mouth-watering clashes expected. Among them will be former 100m record holder Asafa Powell, who was absent from last year's staging, along with Jamaica's World and Olympic 100m champion Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce. American 400m World champion Sanya Richards-Ross will also be making a return to the meet along with World and Olympic 400m hurdles champion Melaine Walker. Olympic 200m champion Veronica Campbell-Brown, and American World Champion 100m bronze medallist Carmelita Jeter will also be among the big names.
Powell is down to compete in the men's 200m along with American World Championships 200m bronze medallist Wallace Spearmon and fellow MVP teammate Nesta Carter. The women's 400m is expected to be one of the most exciting event on the cards, as Richards-Ross will renew her rivalry with Christine Ohuruogu of the United Kingdom, Jamaica's trio of Novlene Williams-Mills, Kalise Spencer, Kenia Sinclair and American Natasha Hastings. Jeter, who won her event last year, will face Kerron Stewart in the women's 100m, along with Trinidad and Tobago's Kelly-Ann Baptiste, Sherone Simpson and America's Marshevet Myers. Fraser-Pryce is down to compete in the women's 200m alongside Campbell-Brown, Shericka Williams, Bianca Knight of America and Debbie Ferguson-McKenzie of the Bahamas. In the 100m for men, last year's winner Darvis Patton will be hard-pressed to repeat the feat as he will be challenged by Yohan Blake, Michael Frater, and Daniel Bailey. The men's 100m hurdles will feature, Dwight Thomas, Ryan Brathwaite of the Barbados and the American pair of Terrence Trammell and Antwon Hicks. Jermaine Gonzales will feature in the men's 400m along with countryman Ricardo Chambers. Walker will compete in the women's 400m hurdles while last year's winner American Kerron Clement is down to participate in the men's equivalent. Tickets for the meet will go on sale on May 4. Spectators will be required to pay $500 to sit in the bleachers, while there are three price categories for the grandstand - $2,500, $2,000, and $1,000.
