Burton stars as STETHS reclaim Headley Cup

Casius Burton Jr turned in a sterling all-round performance to help rural cricket kingpins St Elizaeth Technical (STETHS) retain their Grace ISSA Headley Cup title with a whopping 363-run win over Tacky of St Mary.

Burton, son of Casius Burton Sr, a former tearaway fast bowler who represented Manchester, Lucas and St Elizabeth Senior cup teams, captured match figures of 9 for 34, bowling leg spin and contributed attractively compiled 100 runs.

His impact with the bat came in the first innings when STETHS were in some discomfort at 115 for 5. In tandem with top scorer Vaneil Bromfield (65), he provided stability facing more than 150 deliveries to score 49 to help STETHS post 231.

He was deadly with the ball in his hand, breaking the back of the Tacky batting, which capitulated from 37 for 1 to 71 all out. His figures of six for 15 off 19 overs were set up by the first seven overs, which conceded only two runs including four maidens on the trot.

Yesterday, Burton after coming at the wicket at 128 for 4, stroked his way to an unbeaten 51, as he put on a a punishing 130-run unbroken partnership with his captain Paul Palmer Jr, as STETHS declared on 258 for 4. That total effectively set an impossible target of 418 for Tacky.

unbeaten

The day's early spotlight was on Palmer as he successfully compiled an unbeaten 104, becoming the first such STETHS player to score three centuries in Headley Cup finals. However, Burton took a large chunk of the admiration, as he demonstrated his growing ability as an all-rounder.

The team's main wicket-taker this season, Donovan Nelson, had already been lost to West Indies duties from the first day, while Nicholson Gordon failed to finish his first-innings spell due to back strain. His fast-bowling partner Omar Samuels delivered just three overs yesterday before he came off with an injury concern.

However, despite delivering a few short deliveries and full tosses, and taking a few overs to settle in on a good length, Burton soldiered through to claim three wickets, and more important, to provide competitive support for the more dangerous offspinner Horane Linton who snared four.

He was elated with his contribution.

"I was overwhelmed," he told Star Sports.

"This is my final year and I was glad I was able to help the team win by batting and bowling well. I got a lot of support from my teammates and my father was there to push me on."
