Woman freed of verbal abuse charge

The matter brought against Kari Douglas, the woman who allegedly verbally abused police who went to end a dance in central Kingston recently, was dismissed in the Petty Sessions Court in St Andrew on Monday.

Douglas' attorney, Michael Howell, made a no-case submission highlighting what he referred to as discrepancies in the evidence provided by the police officers involved in the matter.

The matter was later dismissed.

The court gave a general warning to persons who use positions of standings to gain favours from the police.

Allegations are that between midnight and 8 a.m. on December 12 of last year police received a call about a loud noise disturbance in the Pryce Lane community in the Kingston 5 area and responded.

Upon the arrival of the police they went to a premises where a sound system was playing in the community.

The police then approached the person playing the music and advised him to turn off the music.

condescending manner

Moments later, Douglas approached the police and reportedly addressed them in a condescending manner.

Douglas asked the police who gave them the authority to lock off the music and they advised her of the Noise Abatement Act.

The police then returned to the selector and advised him to discontinue playing the music, when Douglas then became abrasive and aggressive towards them.

The officers also requested the permit granted by the police and the entertainment licence from the KSAC giving permission to host the event, however, none were made available.

The police later sought assistance from other personnel by using their radios to call for assistance as the partygoers joined in on the assault.

When assistance was received, Douglas was taken into police custody and subsequently charged.

Douglas had been charged with disorderly conduct and obstructing the police.
