Cosmetologist charged with fraud

A cosmetologist charged with fraudulent conversion was granted $30,000 bail in the Corporate Area RM Court on Friday.

She is Michelle Nairne, 23, from Clarendon, who is to return to court on May 4.

Allegations are that on February 20, the complainant saw an advert in TheSunday Gleaner where a 1995 Nissan B13 motor car was being sold for $120,000.

The complainant contacted and spoke to the accused who gave her name as Michelle Nairne. She advised him to make a down payment of $60,000 to a Jamaica National (JN) account in order to secure the car.

Further allegations are that efforts made to contact Nairne to pick up the vehicle proved futile. The matter was reported to the bank and also to the police.

On Friday, March 18, the accused went to the JN May Pen branch to transact business from the account that she was found to be the owner of. The police were called and she was arrested.

Attorney-at-law Peter Champagnie, who made the bail application on behalf of the accused, explained to the court that his client's boyfriend told her that he wanted some money to be lodged to her account, which she facilitated.

Further he told the court that her boyfriend was the one who placed the advert in the paper. He also said that Nairne was prepared to assist the police in any way possible.
