Mary Telfer, of Buckingham district near Font hill in St Thomas, turned 104-year-old on February 28. Telfer was once featured in THE STAR when she turned 94. In that interview, she said she was hoping to score a century. Today, we can say that she has far exceeded her own expectations. The mother of six children, one deceased, Telfer now resides with her eldest daughter Dorrine Brown in Martha Brae, Trelawny. When THE STAR Life× visited her home, she was surrounded by family, friends and well-wishers. Although she does not talk much these days, Telfer seemed to be a very pleasant lady. Still jovial at her age, a smile could be seen on her face from time to time. Evidence of this came after she was shown a picture of herself from her recently held birthday party. After examining the picture she said, "A mi dis," filling the room with laughter. Born to Edward Telfer and Francis Morrison, the centenarian attended Font Hill School in St Thomas. She said she was a farmer for most of her adult life. christian One of her granddaughters, Laurel Harris, who said she was raised by Telfer since she was three-year-old, noted that, "She always say her father tell her she would live to be 100." A Christian for many years, Telfer said she attended the Font Hill Seventh-day Baptist Church. THE STAR was informed that her favourite Bible verses are Psalms 34 and Psalms 103. Another of her granddaughters, Lucetta Johnson, who resides in England, remembers Telfer as a disciplinarian. "She was stern at times, but it made me a better person," Johnson recalled of her grandmother. Telfer said that her favourite foods these days are soup, crackers and cake. She also enjoys drinking mint tea and milk. |
