Knibb gets Champs first record

St Jago High School Class II athlete Kellion Knibb became the first record-breaker at the ISSA GraceKennedy Boys and Girls' Athletics Championships as she erased the one-year-old shot put record of 13.52 metres done by former St Hugh's High athlete Candicea Bernard with a mark of 13.64 metres.

Vere Technical's Serena Canegan was second with 12.10 metres, while Class I discus champion Danniel Thomas of Edwin Allen was third with a throw of 12.04 metres, her teammate Sasha-Gaye Marston picked up fourth with a throw of 11.99 metres.

In the first final yesterday, Edwin Allen picked up 14 valuable points in the Class III girls high jump, as despite favourite for the event Danique Bryan only managing fourth, her teammate Onessa Patten picked up the mantle by taking the gold medal after clearing 1.70 metres. Immaculate's Safia Morgan gave her school their first points of the Championships after her second-place finish, while Manchester High's Annastacia Forrester pocketed the bronze for third, also at 1.70 metres.

Defending champion Holmwood Technical gave signs that they will not give up their title that easily as they took a quinella in the girls Class IV long jump. Colesta Baker with a leap of 5.37 metres took the gold medal ahead of her teammate Ganesha Campbell (5.24), as Voshan Lynch of Excelsior gave the Mountain View Avenue school their first medal in a long time, after finishing third for the bronze with 5.19 metres.

fastest qualifier

Today will see the semi-finals and the finals of the marquee 100 metres. In Class IV girls preliminary round action, favourite Rushelle Burton of St Andrew High was the fastest qua-lifier, as she clocked 12.76 seconds to win her heat. She was followed into today's semi-final by Wolmer's Girls' Okaliaa Buchanan (12.78), Edwin Allen's Sheleice Clarke 12.84 and Randese Ennis of Camperdown (12.96) seconds.

The first final on the track today will be the girls Class 111 1500 metres at 6:15p.m. St Elizabeth Technical Aleitha McLaughlin with a time of 4:49.68 is the fastest qualifier, just ahead of Holmwood Technical's Lisa Buchanan with 4:52.74. In Class II, Edwin Allen pair of Marleena Eubanks (4:47.66) and Carla Thompson 4:52.71 are the two-top qualifiers.

Action also got under way in the 400 metres where athletes will compete in today's semi-final. Holmwood Technical top quarter miler Chris-Ann Gordon produced the fastest time of the day when she stopped the clock at 53.35 seconds to win her heat in Class II. Vere Technical Olivia James (54.80) and Spadings High Simoya Campbell (55.05) are the three top qualifiers. Defending champion Shericka Jackson of Vere looks quite easy in winning her heat in 55.88 seconds to advance.
