Bombing Pearl Harbour |
|||||
Dear Pastor,
I was a young boy growing up on Orange Street in the early 1950's. I've never forgotten Pearl Harbour or some of the other destitute characters who roamed the streets of Kingston. People like Elephant man, Bag-a-wire and Reggie butt. Pearl Harbour could be seen every evening at about 6:00 p.m. dragging her way up to a government lodging for the indigents named penny-a-night lodging. It was at the corner of Orange and Drummond Streets. She was a prostitute. She was indeed white. She was a frightening and aggressive woman, and the braver ones among us would trail behind her calling out her name. Pearl Harbour always seemed dirty and drunk. Her legs were both swollen and inflamed. Growing up downtown, I knew what prostitutes did, and I was amazed that men could have sex with such a filthy creature. R.S. Dear R.S., People have different opinions about Pearl Harbour. You described her as a dirty, filthy-looking woman. Perhaps when she got very old she was not able to take care of herself. Some say that she was rather famous and beautiful and many men found her attractive. She was very choosy and not everybody who could have paid her for sex could have got her. champion lover In fact, it is alleged that Pearl Harbour had sexual intercourse with 58 sailors one night and each paid her US$1. A certain police officer confessed that he tried to become intimate with her and she did not even give him a chance. However, after she became old and could hardly help herself, he had pity on her and offered her help; and she accepted. Pastor |
