Attorney-at-Law Conrod Powell was yesterday found guilty on corruption charges and attempting to pervert the course of justice in the May Pen Resident Magistrate's Court.

The 38-year-old attorney from St Elizabeth, who was arrested and charged more than a year ago by members of the Anti Corruption Branch (ACB), will be sentenced on May, 31, 2011.

Powell was the attorney representing two Manchester residents who were charged by police on January 8, 2010, for possession of ganja and operating without a trade licence under the Metal and Jewellery Act.

Powell made contact with the arresting officer in relation to the charges laid against his clients and made arrangement for a sum of money to be paid over to him to withdraw the charges.

The ACB got information of the arrangements to corrupt the police officer and a sting operation was set up, at which time, Powell was held after he gave a part payment of $10,000 to the arresting officer as a bribe to compromise both cases on behalf of one of his clients.

Commenting on yesterday's judgement, Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of the Anti-Corruption Branch, Justin Felice, said that the verdict is another clear indication that his men are not afraid to go after corrupt members of the public to include members of the legal-fraternity who seeks to corrupt members of the police force and also those who try to pervert the course of justice.
