Court hears that ... 70-y-o woman in machete fight

A 70-year-old woman who was accused of attacking another woman with a machete received some form of leniency in court yesterday.

One of the charges brought against her was dismissed when the matter appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's court

The defendant, Violet Stewart, from a Beverley Gardens address in Kingston, was fined $1,000 or 10 days for possession of an offensive weapon.

However, a no order was made for the other charge, assault at common law.

The court heard that on the day of the incident, March 5, Stewart and the complainant were involved in an argument in the morning that was later quelled.

Later on in the day, Stewart is reported to have verbally assaulted the complainant as the woman walked by her house.

The complainant is said to have, however, responded to the assault with abusive words of her own which were directed at Stewart.

The accused woman is said to have entered her house and returned with a machete that she is alleged to have used to swing at the complainant several times while she continued her verbal confrontation.
